What Is a Nylon Duct Hose?

  • Compressible for storage. When not in use, nylon duct hoses compress to approximately 10-15% of their deployed length, making them easy to store in tool boxes, vehicle compartments, and equipment cabinets.

Types of Nylon Duct Hoses

1. PVC-Coated Nylon Duct Hose

The most common type. A woven nylon fabric base is coated on one or both sides with PVC, creating a durable, airtight, and chemical-resistant duct. The PVC coating provides:

When to choose nylon: When portability and lightweight are the top priorities. No other duct hose material matches nylon's combination of light weight, flexibility, compact storage, and durability. If abrasion resistance is the top priority (CNC dust collection, pneumatic conveying of abrasive particles), PU hose is the better choice. If temperature is the top priority (engine exhaust, welding near the arc), silicone is the answer.

How to Size a Nylon Duct Hose

Proper sizing ensures adequate airflow without excessive velocity (which increases noise, wear, and energy consumption) or insufficient velocity (which allows particles to settle in the duct). Follow this three-step process:

Step 1: Determine Required CFM

Start with the air volume required at the point of use. Common reference values:

  • Table saw dust collection: 350-400 CFM
  • Sander/grinder: 200-350 CFM
  • Welding fume extraction hood: 150-300 CFM per station
  • Confined space ventilation: volume (cu ft) x ACH / 60
  • Portable AC distribution: match the unit's output CFM

Step 2: Select Minimum Transport Velocity

For conveying applications (dust, particles), the air velocity inside the duct must exceed the minimum transport velocity to keep particles suspended:

  • Fine dust (welding fumes, smoke): 2,000-2,500 fpm
  • Wood dust/shavings: 3,500-4,000 fpm
  • Metal chips/grindings: 4,000-4,500 fpm
  • Heavy particles (sand, gravel): 4,500+ fpm
  • Pure air ventilation (no particles): 1,000-2,000 fpm

Step 3: Calculate Duct Diameter

Use the formula: Area = CFM / Velocity, then convert area to diameter.

Example: A woodworking table saw needs 400 CFM with a minimum transport velocity of 3,500 fpm.

  • Area = 400 / 3,500 = 0.114 sq ft = 16.5 sq inches
  • Diameter = sqrt(4 x Area / pi) = sqrt(4 x 16.5 / 3.14) = 4.58"
  • Round up to the next standard size: 6" nylon duct hose

Always round up to the next standard diameter. An oversized duct reduces velocity (and noise/wear) at the cost of slightly more material. An undersized duct creates excessive velocity, noise, and premature wear.

Installation and Maintenance Tips

  • Clamp connections securely. Use band clamps or worm-gear clamps at every joint. Nylon duct hoses do not have the rigidity to hold a friction-fit connection -- they will pull loose under vacuum or positive pressure.
  • Support long horizontal runs. For permanent or semi-permanent installations exceeding 10 feet, support the duct with straps or saddles every 6-8 feet to prevent sagging and maintain airflow.
  • Ground anti-static hoses. If conveying combustible dust, verify that the grounding wire is continuous from one end to the other and connected to the facility grounding system at both the source and the collection point.
  • Inspect regularly. Check for abrasion wear (especially at bends and contact points with sharp edges), PVC coating delamination, and steel wire exposure. Replace any section showing wire exposure -- the protruding wire can snag and tear rapidly.
  • Store properly. Compress the hose by collapsing it along the wire helix and store flat or coiled. Avoid kinking or bending at sharp angles during storage, which can fatigue the wire helix and create permanent deformation.
  • Clean with compressed air. For dust buildup inside the hose, blast compressed air through the bore. PVC-coated nylon can also be wiped clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use solvent-based cleaners on PVC coatings.

When connecting nylon duct hose to a dust collector or blower with a different diameter port, use a tapered reducer rather than forcing a mismatched connection.
