An undersized duct starves a room of conditioned air, raises static pressure, and forces your blower to work overtime. An oversized duct wastes material, costs more to insulate, and can actually reduce air velocity to the point where conditioned air never reaches the register. This guide walks through every standard diameter from 3 inch flex duct to 24 inch flex duct, with the CFM data and application context you need to make the right call.

CFM values assume a fully extended flex duct at recommended velocities (400-700 fpm). Compressed or sagging ducts lose 20-40% of rated capacity. Always install flex duct fully stretched per ACCA and SMACNA guidelines.
6-Inch Flex Duct
The 6 inch flex duct is the most commonly installed residential supply duct in the United States. With a cross-sectional area of 28.3 square inches and a recommended airflow range of 50 to 100 CFM, it is the go-to size for standard bedrooms, home offices, and guest rooms in the 120 to 200 square foot range.
A 6 flex duct handles the output of a single ceiling register in most residential systems. At 100 CFM, air velocity through a 6" duct reaches approximately 510 fpm -- well within the 400-700 fpm comfort zone that keeps noise levels acceptable. For runs longer than 20 feet or with multiple bends, consider upsizing to a 7" or 8" duct to maintain the required CFM without excessive static pressure.

8-Inch Flex Duct
The 8 flex duct steps up to 50.3 square inches of cross-sectional area and a recommended CFM range of 100 to 200. This makes it ideal for larger bedrooms, living rooms, and open-plan kitchens in the 250 to 400 square foot range. It is also a popular choice for residential return air runs, where lower velocity (under 500 fpm) keeps noise down.
At 150 CFM, velocity through an 8" duct is approximately 430 fpm -- quiet and efficient. Many HVAC contractors use 8 inch flex duct as their "default upsize" when a Manual D calculation shows a 6" duct is borderline. The incremental material cost is minimal, and the airflow improvement is significant. In unconditioned attic spaces, pair it with our R6 or R8 insulated flex duct to prevent condensation and heat loss.
10-Inch Flex Duct
The 10 flex duct bridges the gap between branch runs and trunk lines. With 78.5 square inches of area and 150 to 350 CFM capacity, a 10-inch flex duct serves large zones, multi-register branch lines, and medium-sized return air paths. Rooms in the 400 to 700 square foot range -- large living rooms, open kitchens, or small commercial offices -- are well served by this size.
At 300 CFM, velocity reaches about 550 fpm -- still within the comfort range. The 10" size is also frequently used as the main return duct in single-story homes with 2-3 ton systems. For best performance, keep runs under 25 feet and support every 5 feet with duct hangers to prevent sagging.
12-Inch Flex Duct
The 12 flex duct enters commercial territory. At 113.1 square inches and 200 to 500 CFM, a 12-inch flex duct handles large open zones, commercial supply runs, and high-capacity residential return ducts. It is the standard choice for connecting a 3-4 ton residential system's return air plenum to the filter grille.
For commercial applications, 12 inch flex duct is often used as branch connections from metal trunk lines to ceiling diffusers in offices, retail stores, and restaurants. The combination of a rigid metal trunk with flexible branches is the most common duct system design, and the 12" size covers the bulk of commercial branch runs. 14-Inch and 16-Inch Flex Duct
The 14 flex duct (153.9 sq in, 300-700 CFM) and 16 flex duct (201.1 sq in, 400-900 CFM) serve medium to large commercial HVAC systems. These sizes are typically used for main supply runs connecting rooftop units (RTUs) to branch takeoff points, or for large return air paths in multi-zone commercial buildings.
At 14 inches and above, installation requires more planning -- bends must be gradual (minimum 14" or 16" centerline radius, respectively), and support spacing becomes critical to prevent the duct's weight from causing sag. The 16-inch size can replace two 10" or 12" branch runs, simplifying the layout in tight ceiling plenums.

18-Inch to 24-Inch Large Flex Duct
Large-diameter flex ducts -- 18 flex duct (254.5 sq in, 500-1,200 CFM), 20 flex duct (314.2 sq in, 600-1,500 CFM), and 24 flex duct (452.4 sq in, 800-2,000 CFM) -- are designed for commercial and light industrial applications where maximum airflow is needed with the installation flexibility that rigid ductwork cannot provide.
Common applications include RTU connections to ceiling plenums, main return air paths in big-box retail, equipment plenum connections in mechanical rooms, and temporary ventilation in construction and events. An 18" flex duct delivers over 1,000 CFM at moderate velocity, while a 24" duct can move 2,000+ CFM -- enough for an entire commercial zone.
At these sizes, proper support is critical. We recommend hanger spacing no greater than 4 feet for 18"+ ducts, with wide-base saddle supports to distribute the load and prevent pinching. 3-Inch, 4-Inch, and 5-Inch Flex Duct
Small-diameter flex ducts serve specialized roles. A 3 flex duct (7.1 sq in, 10-25 CFM) is used for range hood make-up air lines and small exhaust connections. A 4 flex duct (12.6 sq in, 20-40 CFM) is the standard for bathroom exhaust fans and dryer vents -- code in most jurisdictions requires a minimum 4" duct for these applications. A 5 flex duct (19.6 sq in, 30-60 CFM) fills the gap between exhaust and supply, used for small bedrooms, utility rooms, and laundry supply registers.

Standard Duct Sizes: What Sizes Are Available?
The duct standard size range for flexible ductwork follows the same diameter increments used across the HVAC industry. Standard duct sizes for flex duct are: 3", 4", 5", 6", 7", 8", 9", 10", 12", 14", 16", 18", 20", and 24" inner diameter. These match the collar and boot sizes used by major HVAC equipment manufacturers, ensuring universal compatibility.
For flexible ducting size selection, the most commonly stocked diameters are 4", 6", 8", 10", and 12" -- these five sizes cover over 90% of residential and light commercial installations. The 6" size alone accounts for roughly 40% of all residential flex duct sales in the United States, followed by 8" at about 25%.
Odd sizes (3", 5", 7", 9") are less common but serve important roles. The 7" duct fills a critical gap between 6" and 8" for medium-sized rooms where 6" is slightly undersized but 8" is overkill. The 9" duct similarly bridges the gap between 8" and 10" for multi-register branch runs. How to Choose the Right Flex Duct Size
Selecting the correct size comes down to matching the duct's CFM capacity to your system's airflow requirements. Here is the step-by-step process:
- Calculate the room's CFM requirement. Use ACCA Manual J for residential or ASHRAE load calculations for commercial. A rough rule of thumb: 1 CFM per square foot of floor area in standard climate zones, but always verify with a proper load calculation.
- Identify available static pressure. Most residential systems provide 0.5" W.G. total external static pressure. After accounting for filters, coils, and registers, the remaining pressure budget for ductwork is typically 0.15" to 0.25" W.G.
- Calculate total effective length. Measure the straight run distance and add equivalent lengths for all bends and fittings. A single 90-degree bend in flex duct adds 35 to 50 equivalent feet.
- Use the size chart. Find the smallest diameter where your required CFM falls within the recommended range. If you are between sizes, always size up -- the incremental cost of a larger duct is far less than the performance penalty of an undersized one.
- Verify velocity. Velocity (fpm) = CFM divided by area (sq ft). Keep velocity between 400 and 700 fpm for residential supply, under 500 fpm for return air, and under 900 fpm for commercial supply.
Quick Sizing Example
A 300-sq-ft living room requires approximately 300 CFM. Looking at the chart, a 10" flex duct handles 150-350 CFM. At 300 CFM through a 10" duct (0.545 sq ft), velocity is 550 fpm -- right in the sweet spot. If the run is over 25 feet or has multiple bends, consider a 12" duct instead for added margin.
Insulated vs Non-Insulated: Size Differences
One important detail that confuses many installers: flex duct sizes always refer to the inner diameter, not the overall outer diameter. An insulated flex duct with R6 insulation (40mm / 1.6" fiberglass) adds approximately 3.2 inches to the outer diameter, while R8 insulation (80mm / 3.1") adds about 6.2 inches.

This distinction matters when routing ducts through joist bays, wall cavities, or tight ceiling plenums. A 12" insulated duct with R8 insulation has an outer diameter of over 18 inches -- it will not fit in a standard 2x10 joist bay. Always plan your routing based on the outer diameter of the insulated duct, not the nominal size.

Common Sizing Mistakes to Avoid
After reviewing thousands of HVAC installations, these are the five flex duct sizing errors we see most often:
- Ignoring equivalent length of bends. A single 90° bend in flex duct adds 35-50 feet of equivalent length. Two bends in a 15-foot run effectively create a 85-115 foot run — enough to justify upsizing from 6" to 8". Most comfort complaints trace back to this mistake.
- Not stretching flex duct fully. Flex duct is shipped compressed. If installed without stretching, the inner liner bunches up and creates friction that can reduce airflow by 20-40%. Always pull the duct to its full extended length before cutting and installing.
- Sizing based on collar, not load. The register boot or takeoff collar size does not determine the correct duct size — the room's CFM requirement does. A 6" collar feeding a 400-sq-ft great room is undersized regardless of what fits the boot.
- Running flex duct through tight spaces without checking outer diameter. A 10" R8 insulated flex duct has a 16.2" outer diameter. It does not fit in a standard 2×10 joist bay (9.25" actual depth). Plan routing based on insulated outer diameter, not nominal size.
- Excessive duct length. Flex duct runs beyond 25 feet significantly increase static pressure and reduce airflow. For long runs, use rigid metal duct for the main trunk and transition to flex only for the final connection to the register — typically the last 6-10 feet.
Flex Duct vs Rigid Metal Duct: When to Use Each
Flex duct and rigid metal duct each have strengths. The best HVAC installations use both — rigid for main trunks and long straight runs, flex for final connections and tight spaces.

Rule of thumb: Use rigid duct for the main trunk line and any run longer than 25 feet. Use flex duct for branch runs to individual registers, especially where routing around obstacles would require multiple rigid elbows.
