Where to Seal: Priority Leak Points

5. Register boot connections — where the duct connects to the ceiling or wall register. These joints are often the leakiest in the system because they flex when registers are pushed in and out for cleaning. Seal with mastic.

How to Apply Mastic Sealant

Materials needed: Water-based mastic sealant (1 gallon per ~35 feet of duct), disposable paintbrush (2-3 inch), fiberglass mesh tape (for gaps >1/4"), disposable gloves, drop cloth or cardboard.

Step 1: Clean the joint. Wipe dust, dirt, and oil from the duct surface around each joint. Mastic adheres best to clean, bare metal. If the surface is oily, wipe with a rag dampened with rubbing alcohol.
