What Is PE Flexible Duct?

PE flexible duct (polyethylene flexible duct) is a lightweight, chemically inert ventilation and air-transfer hose made from polyethylene film spirally wound over a galvanized or stainless steel wire helix. The wire provides structural rigidity against collapse under negative pressure, while the PE jacket delivers flexibility, corrosion resistance, and — in clear versions — visual transparency.

PE duct has been standard in European marine and process-industry supply chains for decades but is increasingly specified in North American projects as procurement teams seek longer-lasting alternatives to aluminum duct in coastal and offshore environments. The material contains no chlorine (unlike PVC), no metal that can corrode, and no fiberglass that can release airborne particles.

Key PE duct properties at a glance:

  • Operating temperature: -30°C to +60°C (-22°F to +140°F); low-temperature PE grades to -50°C
  • Wall thickness: 0.10mm–0.30mm depending on diameter and pressure rating
  • Weight: 30–60% lighter than equivalent aluminum duct
  • Bend radius: Typically 1× to 1.5× duct diameter
  • Corrosion resistance: Excellent (saltwater, dilute acids, oils, fuels)
  • UV resistance: Moderate; specify UV-stabilized grade for outdoor use

PE vs PVC vs Aluminum: Which to Choose?

Bottom line: PE wins in marine, cold-climate, and food/pharma applications. PVC is better where oil mist or solvent vapors are present (PVC's plasticizers help maintain flexibility at the cost of chemical purity). Aluminum is preferred for high-temperature HVAC supply air runs where corrosion is not a concern.

Marine Applications

Marine environments are hostile to metal ductwork. Salt air, condensation cycles, and vibration cause aluminum and galvanized steel duct to pit, corrode, and delaminate within 2–5 years. PE flexible duct, being polymer-based, is inherently immune to these mechanisms. This makes it the standard choice for the following marine applications:

Ship Ventilation & Bilge Air Systems

PE flexible duct is widely used for temporary and semi-permanent ventilation in cargo holds, engine rooms, pump rooms, and bilge spaces aboard commercial vessels. The duct routes fresh air from deck-mounted fans to lower decks, or exhausts fumes from enclosed spaces before crew entry — a safety requirement under maritime confined space regulations (IMO MSC-MEPC.2/Circ.3).

Typical specification: 200mm–400mm diameter PE duct, 50m–100m continuous rolls, clear/transparent so crew can confirm airflow and detect obstructions. Stainless steel wire helix is recommended over galvanized wire for permanent installations exposed to bilge water.

Port & Ship Chandler Supply Chains

Ship chandlers and port supply companies — like VEMARINE SERVICES LLC and similar marine procurement firms — stock PE flexible duct as a frequently ordered consumable item. Vessels require replacement duct rolls on a per-voyage or annual basis, especially for temporary ventilation rigs used during cargo operations, hot-work permits, and tank cleaning. Common chandler order: 4–8 rolls of 200mm–400mm transparent PE duct, 100m/roll, delivered to port on a scheduled port call.

Offshore & Oil & Gas Platforms

Offshore platforms require ATEX-rated or anti-static duct for classified hazardous zones near gas processing equipment. In non-classified zones (accommodation modules, utility rooms), standard PE duct handles ventilation economically. The light weight is particularly valuable offshore, where helicopter lift weight and cargo limits make heavy metal duct impractical for routine replacements.

Refrigerated Cargo (Reefer) Vessels

Reefer vessels require flexible air distribution inside refrigerated holds down to -25°C. PE duct with a low-temperature-grade formulation (minimum service temperature -30°C to -50°C) remains pliable and flexible at these temperatures, unlike standard PVC which becomes brittle below -10°C. Clear PE duct allows visual inspection of frost buildup patterns.

Industrial Applications

Beyond marine, PE flexible duct serves numerous industrial ventilation, transfer, and process-air applications:

  • Food processing plants: PE is FDA-compliant and contains no plasticizers that could migrate into food-contact air. It is used for cooling air distribution over conveyor lines, dough proofer ventilation, and fresh air supply in chilled meat processing.
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing: ISO cleanroom air supply runs use transparent PE duct for visual confirmation that dampers are open and airflow is unobstructed. PE's non-fiber-releasing surface avoids the particle contamination risk of fiberglass-wrapped ducts.
  • Chemical plant ventilation: PE resists dilute acids (HCl, H₂SO₄ up to ~10% concentration), alkalis, and many solvents, making it a lower-cost alternative to PTFE duct for mild chemical ventilation exhaust. Always request a chemical compatibility chart before specifying for aggressive environments.
  • Construction site & tunnel ventilation: Lightweight PE duct rolls reduce manual handling labor on construction sites. A 100m roll of 300mm PE duct weighs approximately 8–10 kg — easily carried by one person — compared to 40–60 kg of equivalent aluminum duct sections.
  • Mining & underground ventilation: Some PE grades comply with flame-retardant requirements for use in underground coal and mineral mines. Anti-static variants prevent electrostatic discharge in dust-explosive environments.

Transparent PE Duct: When and Why

Clear (transparent) PE flexible duct looks like a visual gimmick but provides a genuine operational advantage in marine and industrial maintenance contexts. When duct runs are in confined or hard-to-reach spaces — engine room overheads, cargo hold ceilings, inter-deck service runs — transparent duct lets a maintenance engineer verify airflow, spot accumulated condensate, confirm damper positions, or identify foreign object ingestion without disconnecting the system.

Transparent PE duct is manufactured from crystal-clear LDPE film with light transmittance of 85–92%. It retains full flexibility and all the chemical resistance properties of opaque PE duct. The main limitation is UV degradation: in direct outdoor sunlight, unprotected clear PE becomes brittle and discolored over 12–24 months. For outdoor runs, specify UV-stabilized clear PE (transmittance drops slightly to ~75%) or protect the duct with an outer sleeve.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is PE flexible duct and how is it different from aluminum or PVC duct?
PE (polyethylene) flexible duct uses a low-density or high-density polyethylene film wound over a steel wire helix. Unlike aluminum duct (which is opaque and rigid when bent tightly), PE duct is lightweight, available in clear/transparent versions, and chemically inert against saltwater, oils, and mild chemicals. Compared to PVC duct, PE is lighter, has a lower minimum bend temperature, and contains no plasticizers that can leach in food or pharmaceutical environments. Standard HVAC aluminum duct is not suitable for marine applications because it corrodes rapidly in salt air; PE duct is inherently corrosion-proof.
What diameters is PE flexible duct available in for marine applications?
Our PE flexible duct is available in diameters from 50mm (2") up to 600mm (24"). Marine ventilation systems commonly use 150mm–400mm (6"–16") for main runs, with 50mm–100mm for spot ventilation in enclosed compartments. For industrial air movers and portable ventilation in cargo holds or pump rooms, 200mm–400mm is the most common range. Custom diameters and lengths are available — rolls can be made to order from 10m up to 200m per roll depending on wall thickness.
Can PE flexible duct be used for seawater or fuel vapor environments?
PE flexible duct is corrosion-proof against seawater and highly resistant to most petroleum-based fuel vapors. It is commonly used for ventilation in bilge spaces, engine rooms, and fuel tank vent lines on commercial vessels. However, for fuel vapor duct runs requiring flame-arresting properties or ATEX compliance, you need a dedicated flame-retardant or conductive anti-static duct — see our anti-static duct guide. Always verify chemical compatibility for specific fuel or solvent environments before ordering.
What roll lengths are available for PE flexible duct?
Standard roll lengths are 25m, 50m, and 100m. For large marine procurement orders (ship chandlers, port supply companies), we produce custom rolls up to 150m–200m per roll in diameters up to 400mm. Custom lengths reduce the number of field joints required, which is important in ship ventilation where mid-run connections are difficult to access. Minimum order for custom roll lengths is typically 500m total.
Do you supply PE duct in transparent / clear versions?
Yes. Transparent (clear) PE flexible duct is a standard option for diameters 50mm–400mm. Clear duct is preferred in industrial and marine settings because maintenance crews can visually inspect for blockages, condensation, or damage without disconnecting the system. It is also used in food processing and laboratory settings for visual flow confirmation. Opaque white and grey PE duct is available in all sizes. Color can be customized for large orders (1,000m+).
