5 Ordering Mistakes Contractors Make
We ship duct to hundreds of contractors every month. These are the ordering mistakes that cost time and money — and how to avoid them:
- Ordering too tight to the estimate. A 10% waste factor is the minimum for flex duct — you lose length to connections (6" per end), cuts for routing around obstacles, and occasional sections with installation damage. A 15% waste factor is safer for complex layouts. On a 280-section subdivision order, going from 0% waste factor to 10% means ordering 28 extra sections. - Ordering everything in 6-inch. Beginners sometimes order all one size and plan to "make it work." Undersized duct runs create high static pressure, noise complaints, and comfort callbacks. - Not confirming stock before promising a timeline. During peak season (May-September in the South), popular sizes like 6-inch and 8-inch R8 can temporarily sell faster than we produce them. - Paying retail at a supply house instead of buying wholesale. Many contractors buy duct 5-10 sections at a time from their local supply house out of habit and convenience.
