Duct Liner vs Duct Wrap: What's the Difference & When to Use Each

Duct liner and duct wrap are both insulation products used on HVAC ductwork, but they go in different places and solve different problems. Confusing the two — or using one when you need the other — is one of the most common specification errors in commercial HVAC. This guide explains what each product does, when to use it, and when you need both.

The Key Difference: Inside vs Outside

Duct liner is a fiberglass blanket adhered to the inside surface of a metal duct. Its primary purpose is sound absorption. The porous fiberglass absorbs acoustic energy from the airstream, reducing both fan noise transmitted down the duct (breakin noise) and duct-generated noise (turbulence at fittings). Liner also provides thermal insulation, but that is a secondary benefit.

Duct wrap is a fiberglass or foam insulation blanket applied to the outside of a duct. Its primary purpose is thermal insulation — preventing heat gain or loss through the duct wall — and condensation prevention. Wrap also reduces breakout noise (sound radiating through the duct wall into the room), but sound absorption of airborne noise inside the duct is minimal.

When to Use Duct Liner

Use duct liner when airborne noise inside the duct is the problem you need to solve. Common scenarios:

Downstream of fans and AHUs. The first 10-15 feet of ductwork after any fan is the noisiest section. 1-inch liner in this zone absorbs 8-12 dB of fan noise before it reaches the occupied space. This is standard practice in offices, hospitals, schools, and hotels.

Near diffusers in noise-sensitive rooms. Lining the last 5-10 feet of duct before a supply diffuser attenuates any remaining airstream noise. Critical for conference rooms, patient rooms, recording studios, and libraries where NC-25 to NC-35 targets are specified.

At duct fittings that generate turbulence. Elbows, tees, and transitions create turbulent noise that propagates downstream. Lining 3-5 feet downstream of these fittings significantly reduces fitting-generated noise.

When to Use Duct Wrap

Use duct wrap when heat transfer or condensation is the problem. Common scenarios:

Ducts in unconditioned spaces. Any duct running through an attic, crawl space, garage, or exterior wall needs wrap to prevent energy loss. See our duct insulation guide for R-value selection by climate zone.

Condensation prevention. Cold AC supply ducts in humid environments (Gulf Coast, Southeast US) will sweat without insulation. R6 or R8 wrap with intact FSK vapor barrier prevents condensation. This is the #1 reason for duct wrap in Houston — our warehouse ships more R6 and R8 insulated duct to Gulf Coast contractors than anywhere else.

Energy code compliance. IECC and state energy codes require minimum R-values for ducts outside the conditioned envelope. Wrap is the standard compliance method for existing metal duct systems.

When to Use Both

Many commercial HVAC systems use liner inside and wrap outside on the same duct. This is standard practice when the duct runs through an unconditioned space (requiring thermal insulation) AND serves a noise-sensitive area (requiring acoustic treatment).

For example, a supply duct running through a ceiling plenum above a hospital patient floor would have 1-inch fiberglass liner inside for noise control and R6 fiberglass wrap outside for thermal performance. The combined R-value is approximately R6.3 (R4.2 from the wrap + R2.1 from the liner).

Alternative to liner + wrap: Pre-insulated flex duct provides both thermal insulation (R6 or R8) and acoustic absorption (the fiberglass between inner and outer layers absorbs sound). For branch runs and residential systems, insulated flex duct eliminates the need for separate liner and wrap entirely.

Pre-insulated flex duct is the most economical solution when both thermal and acoustic performance are needed — but only for branch runs up to 25 feet. For main trunks, risers, and high-pressure systems, lined and wrapped metal duct is the correct approach.

What is the difference between duct liner and duct wrap?
Duct liner is installed inside the duct to absorb sound. Duct wrap is installed outside the duct to prevent heat transfer and condensation. They serve different primary purposes — liner is acoustic, wrap is thermal — though both provide some degree of the other function. Many commercial systems use both simultaneously.
Can I use duct wrap instead of duct liner for sound?
Duct wrap provides minimal sound absorption (3-5 dB reduction) compared to duct liner (8-18 dB). If noise control is the goal, wrap alone is not sufficient. However, for residential systems where noise is a minor concern, R6 or R8 insulated flex duct — which has insulation between the inner and outer layers — provides acceptable sound attenuation without separate liner.
Does duct liner reduce airflow?
Yes, duct liner reduces the effective inside diameter of the duct by twice the liner thickness (1 inch liner reduces a 12-inch duct to 10 inches effective). This increases velocity and pressure drop. When specifying lined duct, size the sheet metal one or two inches larger than the unlined equivalent to maintain the same airflow capacity.
How thick should duct liner be?
Standard duct liner thickness is 1 inch for supply ducts and 0.5 inch for return ducts. In noise-sensitive environments (hospitals, recording studios, conference rooms), 2-inch liner may be specified for the first 10-15 feet downstream of the fan. Thicker liner provides more sound absorption, especially at low frequencies, but further reduces the effective duct size.
Is duct liner a fire hazard?
No. HVAC duct liner must meet ASTM C1071 and UL 181 for fire resistance. Fiberglass duct liner is inherently non-combustible (the glass fibers do not burn). The facing (typically black fiberglass mat or foil-scrim-kraft) is fire-rated. Duct liner installed per SMACNA standards is fully code-compliant and poses no fire risk.
