Duct board is a rigid fiberglass insulation panel with a factory-applied foil-scrim-kraft (FSK) facing that serves as both the duct wall and the insulation in a single material. Instead of fabricating a sheet metal duct and then wrapping it with insulation, duct board is scored, folded into rectangular shapes, and sealed with pressure-sensitive tape and mastic to create a finished, insulated duct in one step.

Duct board has been a standard HVAC material in the US since the 1970s. It is used extensively in residential and light commercial construction because it is faster to fabricate than sheet metal, costs less (no separate insulation step), and provides good thermal and acoustic performance. When to Use Duct Board

Best applications: Residential main trunk lines in attics and crawl spaces where the combined insulation-plus-duct in a single material saves significant labor. Small commercial tenant fit-outs where speed matters and system pressure is low (under 2" W.G.). Retrofit projects where sheet metal fabrication access is limited.

When not to use duct board: High-pressure commercial systems (above 2" W.G.), environments where duct cleaning is required (hospitals, food service), large trunk lines exceeding 48 inches on any side, exterior or exposed installations, and anywhere subject to physical damage or moisture contact.

When to Choose Alternatives

For branch runs in residential and light commercial systems, pre-insulated flex duct is faster and cheaper than duct board. For main trunks in commercial systems, sheet metal duct (either spiral or rectangular) with external duct insulation provides superior durability and pressure handling.

The most common modern residential system uses duct board for the main supply plenum and trunk, with insulated flex duct for all branch runs to individual rooms. This combination optimizes cost, installation speed, and performance.

What is duct board?
Duct board (also called rigid fiberglass duct board or duct wrap board) is a rigid panel of fiberglass insulation with a factory-applied foil facing on one side and a reinforced mat or fiberglass facing on the other. It is scored, folded, and sealed to fabricate insulated rectangular HVAC ductwork directly — eliminating the need for separate sheet metal duct and external insulation. Standard thickness is 1 inch (R4.2) or 1.5 inches (R6).
Is duct board as good as sheet metal duct?
For residential and light commercial HVAC, duct board performs comparably to insulated sheet metal duct at lower cost and faster installation. However, sheet metal is stronger, handles higher pressures, lasts longer (50+ years vs 20-30 years for duct board), and is easier to clean. For commercial systems with high static pressure, large trunk lines, or applications requiring duct cleaning, sheet metal is superior.
How long does duct board last?
Duct board typically lasts 20-30 years in a residential HVAC system. The fiberglass itself does not degrade, but the foil facing, tape joints, and internal surface can deteriorate over time, especially in humid climates. Physical damage from attic access, rodents, or water leaks is the most common cause of failure. Sheet metal duct, by comparison, lasts 50+ years.
Can duct board be used for return air?
Yes, duct board is commonly used for both supply and return air ducts. For return air, the smooth foil side typically faces outward (since return air is not conditioned and does not need the vapor barrier on the inside). Some installations use the fiberglass mat side facing the airstream for sound absorption on return ducts, but this is controversial because exposed fiberglass can release particles into the airstream over time.
Is duct board a fire hazard?
No. Duct board fiberglass is non-combustible and meets NFPA 90A and NFPA 90B fire safety standards when installed correctly. The foil facing is also non-combustible. Duct board manufactured to ASTM C1397 and UL 181 standards meets all fire code requirements for residential and commercial HVAC. The closure tape and sealant must also be UL 181A listed.
